Sailing Cross

Monks on the remote island of Illauntaunig off the Kerry coast carved this highly symbolic, strikingly simple cross.

The monks were faced with two main concerns: the spiritual and the practical. The practical question of how to feed the body was answered by the sea and the spiritual question of nourishing the soul was met by faith. Both these dimensions are described by this ancient carving from the island which depicts a cross standing in the waves, and also resembles a masted boat.

Carved by the sculptor Liz Morrissey after the stone original on the remote island of Illauntaunig off the Kerry coast, it has a carefully polished pure bronze finish with a ceramic resin cold cast pouring.

Dimensions: 3 x 9 inches (8 x 24cm)

This piece comes in a Wild Goose Studio presentation gift box.
